Domestic assistants' 8-week basic cookery course (Countrywide)
The Domestic Assistants' Basic Cookery Course at the Pick 'n Pay School of Cooking is a participation course which runs over a period of 8 weeks. The 4 hour classes are held once a week, in the mornings, commencing at 9am. The classes are of a practical nature and certain dishes are demonstrated, but students keep what they cook. All ingredients are supplied by the School of Cooking.
Students are taught a variety of dishes, basic kitchen skills, correct techniques and cooking methods, table setting, serviette folding and telephone skills. Students must be able to read, write and understand English.
1ST LESSON
Metrication and correct measuring techniques. Baking of wholewheat bread using yeast. Baking scones. Making omlettes. General rules in the kitchen.
2ND LESSON
Preparation of vegetables plus accompanying sauces. Vegetable stir-fry and basic cream of vegetable soup with variations. Students make a macaroni cheese dish. Table setting, folding of serviettes and westernised table etiquette.
3RD LESSON
Cooking methods applied to red meat. Different meat cuts are discussed. Roast meat and accompaniments, potroasting and pan frying the perfect steak are demonstrated. Students prepare a delicious stew or casserole.
4TH LESSON
Students learn the preparation and versatility of ground beef (mince). Students prepare a delicious lasagne. Perfect hamburgers and chips are demonstrated.
5TH LESSON
Students prepare a chicken casserole. Roasted and potroasted chicken with sauces are demonstrated, also the correct cooking methods for filleted chicken breasts.
6TH LESSON
This lesson covers the techniques and cooking methods applied to fish. Each student prepares a fish bake. Perfect fried and grilled fish are demonstrated.
7TH LESSON
Students prepare a quiche and learn the variations. Pizzas are demonstrated. A variety of salads are served for tasting. Telephone skills.
8TH LESSON
Mouthwatering desserts. Students make 1 dessert and also bake a cake. All participants are handed their certificates on completion of the course.

Domestic workers 6-week beginners cooking course (Durban)
Women's Lifestyle World is running a 6-week basic cooking course in Durban-North. The course runs one day a week from 9am to 12:30pm.
Cost includes all ingredients and all recipes in English and Zulu with personal service and hands-on teaching and supervision. The students sample the prepared food after each lesson.

Domestic Cooking Classes (Plettenberg Bay)
Lavender & Limes Catering Service runs 2-day short cooking classes for domestic workers in Plettenberg Bay.
The food is nutritious, healthy, seasonal and functional. We teach easy recipes for family meals and entertaining, soups, salads, chicken, fish, vegetarian, sauces, vegetables, desserts, baking and presentation.
Your employee will be taught new skills in a friendly, social environment. Her interest in food will be stimulated and she will be motivated through demonstrations and a hands on approach. Certificates are issued after each two day class.
Examples of a class:
Shallow fried fresh fish
homemade tartare sauce

Tea + fruit loaf
Homemade beef burgers
Healty skin chips
coleslaw salad
English scones
The cost per cooking class is R275 per person for a two day class from 9am - 11am. The duration of a typical class is 4 hours.
Class dates are advised throughout the year. 1 or 2 classes a month, 12 in total
