CRITERIA: The winner should be an individual, group or community in the food or agriculture industry that preserves threatened produce, farming practices and gastronomic traditions, while treating the environment and work force with due care and consideration.
WHAT: Doornkraal smoked pumpkin seeds, citroenkonfyt and moskonfyt.
WHO? Situated on the N12 between Oudtshoorn and De Rust, this proudly South African padstal is owned by Swepie le Roux, whose family has farmed on Doornkraal for six generations. In addition to the usual farmstall fare, it sells rare traditional products that you won’t be finding on sommer any supermarket shelf, like citron jam and moskonfyt (grape must jam), as well as innovative eats like smoked pumpkin seeds and salt smoked with Karoo herbs.
WHY? The judges could stop snacking on handfuls of Doornkraal’s delightfully ‘bacony’ roast pumpkin seeds whilst reading all about the farm’s interesting history. Equally impressive was the stall’s sweetly sour citron jam – a real find these days – and their use of indigenous Karoo bushes to smoke their salt. Anthropologist Anna was adamant that these guys deserved the prize for their devotion to all things local, concluding with, “They're doing very elegant things with South African heritage."
How to enjoy it:
• Forego the buttery popcorn and munch on handfuls of smoked pumpkin seeds as a healthy movie snack.
• Scatter the smoky seeds onto salads.
• Make jam tarts with citron preserve.
• Serve Karoo-smoked salt with crusty bread, extra-virgin olive oil and a good balsamic vinegar.
