Braai Day is an initiative of Braai4Heritage, a non-profit, apolitical initiative that aims to create social cohesion by encouraging all South Africans to actively celebrate our national heritage annually, simply by having a braai.
The essence of the Braai Day is that it takes place wherever people get together to cook food over an open fire. In 2008, there were braais in Canada, Sweden, the UK, Taiwan, Dubai, the USA, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Australia and many other locations where South Africans can be found.
The National Heritage Council supports the initiative, with Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu as the Patron.
