I recently celebrated a rather alarming milestone birthday and really felt the need to do something different. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the usual catered bash at home or at a hired venue but my hedonistic side felt the need to drag the occasion out a bit longer than just one night!

So after a bit of investigation I discovered the most fabulous farm in Elands Bay called Vensterklip. Now usually I wouldn't mention such a thing as this site is all about eating in, but this place offers self catering accommodation and the sexiest camp sites ever, and that, at least in my books, counts for eating in… just not in your own home.

I won't bore you with the details of my party, for indeed the kind and more than able folk at Ventersklip did all the cooking (think heavenly free range lamb from a neighbouring farmer, fresh herbs, crisp garden salads and the crustiest, most delicious sour dough bread hot from the oven). But having now been there on more than one occasion I thought I'd share with you the idea of holidaying up the West Coast in the Sandveld. There's kayaking and fishing in Verloren Vlei (of course you can cook what you catch), there's oodles of crayfish when the season starts (sadly it's a while ‘til the November kick-off, but it's useful information to have), and there are birds galore - these strictly for viewing not eating. You can surf or do a bit of saltwater fishing and after that head back to your camp site which not only has a spectacular view of the vlei but a bathroom, kitchenette and electricity too. Or opt for a beautifully appointed cottage (complete with crisp cotton white linen) and get cooking.

Obviously this is not the only place of its kind in our gorgeous country, but the idea I'm hoping to get across is one of exploration. The hunter-gatherer idea - hit the road, meet the people, find the food and cook it yourself. Few things are quite as rewarding.

Happy travels!
