On September 01 when I sat down to write this, the weather in Cape Town was so miserable that not one happy spring thought sprang to mind. In disgust (and in retrospect, rather wisely) I gave up the idea, dived back onto the couch and put all thoughts of trying out of my mind.
Sunday September 02 dawned crisply sunny – you know the kind of weather when you wear a T-shirt but pack a jersey just in case. A smile instantly found it’s way to my lips and I was out the door soaking up the sunshine without giving the couch a second glance.
Then we did what it appeared the rest of the neighbourhood was doing – in true SA style, we lit a fire, invited some friends and had a braai.
The first of the season’s young asparagus, steamed, cooled and dipped into thick, lemony homemade mayo was a great ‘made to share’ starter while we stood around the fire. A couple of racks of lamb, boiled baby potatoes and a radish, fennel, celery and feta salad completed the meal, all washed down with lots of crisp Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc ’07. Not to be cheated out of a moment in the glorious sunshine, we leapt in the car with a huge tub of Sinnfull’s extraordinarily good coffee ice cream and traipsed a little way up the mountain behind our house to gaze at the twinkling ocean, listen to the birds, gorge ourselves on ice cream and bask in the glory of spring. Aah at last the long happy months of eating-in, out…in the sun, begin…
Please let me know (eatin.web@newmediapub.co.za) of any fabulously innovative braai ideas you and your friends may have and I’ll post the best of your ideas and recipes right here on the Eat In newsletter and our gorgeous website www.eat-in.co.za.
Here’s to spring and all the warm, sunny days ahead.
