Winter is here! How lovely. It means soups, stews, curries, coats, boots – all my favourite things. It does, however, make going to an outdoor market a bit tricky.

The new Eat In magazine
When I think of the pressure our planet is under, the damage the human race is inflicting on it on a daily basis, and the food crisis that has resulted, I feel a bit overwhelmed.

A day of celebration
For some people it was their wedding day or the day they gave birth to a child. For others, the moment they found out that they passed an important exam or got a big promotion; when they met Desmond Tutu, stood at the base of the Eiffel tower or saw their name in print for the first time.

Happiness is…
My beloved pale rose Le Creuset casserole, filled to the brim with fragrant chicken korma, standing proud on a table of appreciative guests. Secret market
Five o’clock on a Saturday afternoon in February in Riebeek Kasteel in the Swartland is not normally a pretty sight. The streets are ominously quiet, the shop doors tightly shut, and the heat beyond sweltering.

A borrel of laughs
Last Saturday we had a handful of friends over for what the Dutch call a borrel – a late afternoon/early evening snack and drink. It’s the perfect way of entertaining in summer: food is lighter and less structured; people can sit or stand around to nibble, chat and watch the sunset; drinks abound; and no-one has a late night.

In my house, we’re as busy with preparations for the meals on the big days as we are with beautiful brunches, lingering lunches and lavish braais. To help with inspiration and ideas, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite Eat In recipes.
